Career and content creation pro tip: Take more pictures – LinkedIn Coach & Social Media Strategist Kristo Olli
Let me start with a confession:
If there’s one thing I wish I had done from the very first day of my career, it’s this:
Taking more behind-the-scenes photos and videos.
  • Not the polished, perfectly staged kind.
  • Not the “I had a photoshoot today” kind.
  • Not the “look how aesthetic my desk is” kind.
I mean the real stuff. The messy stuff. The moments that hurt, pushed me, terrified me, or made me grow.
Looking back, I genuinely regret not capturing moments like:
  • Rehearsing my first-ever LinkedIn workshop in front of my partner
  • Staying up until 4 AM working on content, courses, and client projects
  • Attempting my first talk on stage, shaking and sweating
  • Breaking down from burnout and almost quitting everything
These weren’t glamorous… but they shaped me. And if you’re building a brand, business, or career – they’re shaping you too.
The problem? Most of us don’t capture any of it. We only take photos when we look good, feel good, or feel “ready.”
But those aren’t the moments that define us. The work does. And if you don’t document those moments now, you’re going to wish you had later.
Let me explain why.

Why behind-the-scenes content is so powerful (even if you think it’s boring)

We live in a world where people trust what they can see.
Not promises. Not fancy titles. Not “I help X do Y” headlines.
Proof. Consistency. Effort. Realness.
Behind-the-scenes content shows all of that instantly.
Here’s why this type of content works so well:

1. It shows your journey – not just the highlight reel

People don’t fall in love with your success. They fall in love with your story.
Your effort. Your transformation. Your behind-the-scenes grind that nobody else sees.
Think about any creator, influencer, or entrepreneur you admire. Chances are, you’ve seen their:
  • early videos
  • first attempts
  • rough beginnings
  • awkward experiments
  • progress over time
That’s what makes them relatable. Without those moments, you’re just another polished face on LinkedIn.

2. It gives you endless content ideas without needing inspiration

Most people say:
“I want to post more on LinkedIn, but I don’t know what to post.”
Meanwhile, their phone gallery is full of sunsets, food, dog pictures, and screenshots of memes. None of which help them build a personal brand.
Imagine if your gallery also had:
  • photos from meetings
  • videos from workshops
  • snippets of you working
  • rehearsals
  • failures
  • lessons
  • restarts
  • drafts
You’d have a content bank for months.
And the best part? You’re not “creating content.” You’re capturing your life.

3. It builds trust faster than any motivational quote

People trust what they can witness.
A polished post about resilience? Nice.
But a photo of you working at 2 AM because you care? Powerful.
A carousel about confidence? Sure.
But a clip of you shaking during your first presentation, followed by how you improved?
Unforgettable.
Behind-the-scenes content proves:
  • you’re real
  • you’re credible
  • you’ve done the work
  • you’ve earned your results
It’s visual proof – the strongest trust builder online.

“But my life is boring… what would I even capture?”

This is the biggest misconception. Your life isn’t boring. You just think it’s boring because you’re used to it (btw, I highly recommend reading the Rembrandt in the attic story that drives this point home extremely well).
What feels ordinary to you is valuable to someone who wants to become who you are or do what you do.
For example:
  • A student wants to see what a professional’s workday looks like.
  • A beginner wants to see how an expert prepares for a project.
  • A junior wants to see how to run their first workshop.
  • A new creator wants to see how you write your posts.
People want to see how you do things, not just the results. If you’re doing anything people want to learn, you’re not boring. You’re a goldmine.

What should you actually capture? (a simple list)

Here’s a list of 20 behind-the-scenes moments you can start capturing today:
Work-related
  • A screenshot of your messy Notion or Google Docs
  • Mistakes you made (and what you learned)
  • You reviewing something on your laptop
  • Trying something new or uncomfortable
  • Notes from workshops or presentations
  • How you prepare for client meetings
  • Your morning routine before work
  • Drafts of your LinkedIn posts
  • Your current project setup
  • Wins you’re proud of
Personal development
  • Rest routines
  • What you're learning
  • Books you're reading
  • A habit you’re working on
  • Challenges you’re struggling with
Emotional moments
  • What you wish you knew earlier
  • What almost made you quit
  • What you’re proud of
  • What changed you
  • What scared you
These moments are rich, emotional, meaningful – and deeply relatable.

The psychology behind BTS content (why people love it)

Behind-the-scenes content hits 3 psychological triggers:

1. Curiosity

People love to see how things actually happen. The more “real” it feels, the more attention it gets.

2. Identity

People follow those they want to become. Your process helps them visualize their own future.

3. Affinity

Sharing personal moments deepens connection. It turns followers into fans, and fans into clients.
This is why platforms like TikTok exploded – authenticity outperforms perfection. LinkedIn is heading in the same direction.

My personal regret and what it taught me

Let me be brutally honest: I wish I had documented more.
Because today, when I reflect on my journey, there are so many things I want to show:
  • how much I doubted myself
  • how nervous I was before my first workshop
  • how many nights I stayed up learning new skills
  • how often I failed before anything started working
Those moments shaped me way more than the wins.
And today, they would be valuable:
  • to my clients
  • to my audience
  • to my future self
  • to my brand story
But I can’t go back and take those photos.
And I don’t want you to feel that same regret in 5–10 years.

Take photos today your future self will thank you for

Record:
  • the start
  • the progress
  • the imperfections
  • the experiments
  • the confusion
  • the learning
  • the failures
  • the growth
These moments build your:
  • personal brand
  • confidence
  • story
  • credibility
  • opportunities
If you’ve ever thought:
“I don’t look good today.”
or
“This moment doesn’t matter.”
Take the photo anyway.
Your future self will be grateful. Your audience will feel closer. Your content will deepen. Your brand will strengthen.
Because your story deserves to be told – not just the polish, but the process.

Your next step: start small

Here’s your simple homework for today:
1️⃣ Take 1 behind-the-scenes photo
(anything – your desk, your notes, your prep, your walk)
2️⃣ Save it in a folder called “Content BTS”
3️⃣ Share it within the next week with a short caption about:
“What this moment means in your journey.”
That’s it.
Do that once a week and your storytelling will transform.
